Step 1

Referral & Initial Consultation

Your journey typically begins with a referral from your primary oncologist, surgeon, or primary care physician. During your first visit, Dr. Kluwe reviews your history, imaging, and pathology. He examines you, reviews your staging and treatment paradigms, and discusses whether radiation therapy may be appropriate for your situation. This is a good time to bring a list of questions and, if possible, a family member or friend.

Step 2

Simulation & Treatment Planning

If radiation therapy is recommended, you will return for a planning session called a simulation. This typically involves a CT scan in the exact position you will be treated in, sometimes with custom positioning devices to help you stay still and comfortable. This scan is used to design a treatment plan tailored to your anatomy.

Step 3

Treatment Course

Most radiation therapy is delivered in a series of short daily sessions, often Monday through Friday, over several weeks — though the exact schedule depends on your diagnosis and treatment approach. Each session is typically brief, and you will see the care team regularly throughout your course to monitor your progress.

Step 4

Monitoring & Side Effect Management

Throughout treatment, Dr. Kluwe and his care team check in regularly to monitor how you are responding and to help manage any side effects. Every patient responds differently, and your team will work with you to keep you as comfortable as possible.

Step 5

Follow-Up & Survivorship Care

After completing treatment, you will have follow-up visits to monitor your recovery and long-term outcomes. Dr. Kluwe remains a resource for you well beyond your last treatment session, coordinating with your broader care team as needed.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to my first visit?

Please bring a photo ID, insurance information, a list of current medications, and any relevant imaging or pathology reports from other providers. It is also helpful to bring a list of questions and, if you’d like, a family member or friend for support.

How long does each treatment session take?

The length of each visit varies by treatment type, but many daily treatment sessions themselves are relatively brief. Your care team will give you a more specific estimate based on your individual treatment plan.

Will I experience side effects?

Side effects vary widely depending on the treatment area, dose, and individual factors. Some patients experience few side effects, while others notice fatigue or localized skin or tissue changes. Your care team will discuss what to expect for your specific treatment and how to manage any symptoms that arise.

Can I continue working during treatment?

Many patients continue working or maintaining daily routines during radiation therapy, though this depends on the treatment area and how you feel. Dr. Kluwe and his team can help you think through what makes sense for your situation.

Who can I contact with questions during treatment?

Your care team is available throughout your treatment course to answer questions. Please call our office at (210) 450-1000 with any concerns.
